Our Story and Approach

Building financial confidence one lesson at a time.

How We Started

slate-plateau began after conversations with dozens of Belfast residents who expressed the same frustration: they wished someone had taught them about money before they made costly mistakes. Parents wanted better for their children. Adults felt embarrassed asking basic questions. Entrepreneurs struggled with financial terminology that seemed designed to confuse.

Rather than create another abstract finance course, we built a curriculum around actual situations people face. A teenager deciding whether to save birthday money. A couple planning for a house deposit. A retiree wondering if their pension will last. These scenarios became the foundation of our teaching method.

What Makes Us Different

We don't believe financial education should feel like sitting through a university lecture. Our instructors come from varied backgrounds—former accountants, business owners, financial advisors who left corporate roles—united by the ability to explain complex ideas in plain language.

Classes are small, usually between eight and twelve participants, which allows for genuine discussion. You're encouraged to ask questions that might seem basic. Many of our most valuable conversations happen when someone admits they don't understand something everyone else seems to take for granted.

We also recognize that different age groups need different approaches. Teaching a nine-year-old about saving requires games and tangible examples. Teaching a forty-year-old about investment requires addressing their specific anxieties and time constraints. Our curriculum adjusts accordingly.

Our Philosophy

Financial capability is not about becoming wealthy, though that may be a result. It's about having options. Understanding your choices. Making informed decisions rather than guessing or following trends. We've seen students leave our courses with less anxiety about money, not because their situation dramatically changed, but because they finally understood how to navigate it.

We don't push products or investment schemes. Our role is education, not sales. When students ask about specific financial products, we explain how to evaluate them, not which one to choose. That decision remains yours.

Who Teaches Our Courses

Every instructor brings professional experience and a genuine interest in helping others develop financial confidence. They remember what it felt like not to know these things, which makes them patient teachers.

Former financial advisor with fifteen years of client-facing experience. Now focuses on education rather than product sales, which students say makes a significant difference in how information is presented.

Youth education specialist

Youth Programme Coordinator

Background in education and child development. Designed our junior courses to make financial concepts engaging without oversimplifying. Parents frequently comment on how much their children retain.

Community learning session

Part of Belfast's Learning Community

Since establishing ourselves in Belfast, we've worked with local schools, community centers, and business groups to expand financial literacy across the city. We believe this knowledge shouldn't be restricted to those who can afford expensive advisors or who stumble across the right information by chance.

Our courses welcome complete beginners alongside those with some financial knowledge. This mix often produces the most interesting discussions, as different perspectives reveal gaps or assumptions that might otherwise go unnoticed.

We measure success not by how many technical terms students can recite, but by whether they feel equipped to make better financial decisions. That's the standard we hold ourselves to with every course we design.
